SETTING
Located in the food centre basement of the upmarket Erawan Bangkok. The decor is simple and basic with brown as the dominating
colour – an ambience suitable for the quick dishes that the restaurant serves.
FOOD
It is rare to find Shanghainese cuisine in Bangkok with such delicious and authentic flavours. Crystal Jade is one with branches all over Asia, so there is no more need to fly to Shanghai for those trademark steamed pork dumplings filled with piping hot soup. Here, a signature dish has the addition of goose liver to its best-selling steamed pork dumplings. The chefs are from China and Hong Kong and they make
fresh, hand-made noodles and dim sum daily. Pork dumpling with hot chilli sauce is another sumptuous treat that is differentiated by the tangy chilli sauce. Spicy beef dumpling is flavourful with huge round balls oozing a delectable beef flavour. Deep-fried prawn with garlic and chilli is a dish with crispy prawns topped with crunchy garlic bits. For dessert, mango pudding is refreshing with chunks of mango meat. Souffle egg white ball with mashed red bean and banana also makes an interestingly different and tasty Chinese dessert.
WINES
Being a Chinese restaurant serving quick dishes, the wine list is not extensive, with about 10 labels from Italy.
SERVICE
Though it is not a small place, there always seems to be plenty of attentive staff about.
PRICE
A filling meal without the likes of peking duck or shark’s fin soup costs 1,000 baht for two.
