SETTING
A tad out of town, 13 kilometres on Doi Saket Road, the restaurant has a distinctive Californian flavour with palm trees and terracotta decor reflecting its owners’ 17 years of running a successful Thai restaurant in Los Angeles. The place is impeccably clean. Cosy, green, peaceful, the House of Palm with its pond is certainly a house of calm.
FOOD
A wonderful choice of dishes, some of which are from the spicy south and some the more familiar northern fare, plus numerous central Thai dishes with splashings of America for variety. Pork back ribs with barbeque sauce is as generous and tasty as any dish to be found in the US, while Chinese-Thai soup with beef tendons is exquisite. The taste of the dishes is rather refined, with subtle spicy flavours indicating the owners’ Western influences. Shrimp cooked in salt with sweet chilli and spicy scallops are just a couple of southern dishes which the House of Palm is fast becoming famous for. The dessert selection is not large, but a few local favourites can be found to end a good and satisfying meal.
WINES
For a Thai restaurant in Chiang Mai, the wine list is most impressive with a good selection of French and Australian wines. Prices range from 800 to 1,800 baht and are reasonable indeed.
SERVICE
This is a big highlight of the place – the owners cook and serve their own dishes. They are attentive, answering your needs before demands are even formulated and are very professional.
PRICE
A meal for two without alcohol will not cost more than 700 baht.
