SETTING
Mondeva is situated in a resort enveloped in lush tropical gardens at the foothills of Doi Suthep. A simple, but pleasant outdoor area is its main drawing card, although there is a dining room to shelter from the rains.
FOOD
Dishes which may sound familiar for those who know Thai cuisine are pleasantly surprising upon arrival due to creative liberties. Pork sarong
appetiser, a central Thai dish which normally comprises balls of spiced minced pork wrapped with egg noodle and deep-fried, uses northern
Thai pickled pork, naem, instead to resounding success. Miang goong, a play on traditional miang kham, is instead a selection of northern herbs and spices with a tasty shrimp sauce wrapped in a large noodle skin and eaten with royal project fresh vegetables. Baan Deva Montra fish is deepfried with Thai herbs. Just about every dish on the menu has an echo of recognition, but with its very own identity. The mix and match playfulness of the chef has created a well-rounded menu which includes such unusual dishes as spare ribs
masala with roti, Thai taco, cheese spring rolls and other intriguing delights.
WINES
The list is average, offering reasonably priced table wines and some decent bottles from both the old and new worlds.
SERVICE
Mondeva’s service is intimate and personal. Guests of the resort as well as the restaurant are made to feel special and staff will bend over backwards to please.
PRICE
Don’t expect to spend more than1,000 baht on a stomach-bursting, lip-smacking meal.
