SETTING
Perhaps the best view in Chiang Mai, Palaad Tawanron overlooks not only its own private lake but the entire cityscape below. A getaway from the mini-metropolis with gentle live music and a sprawling leafy outdoor terrace.
FOOD
A huge selection of dishes are available, but the standout is surely the seafood. Make sure to start off with raw shrimps served with spicy
chilli and lime dip. With crab it is always a bit of a struggle to extract the meat, but in this case it is worth it – the sauces are good and flavourful and the meat is abundant. One of Palaad Tawanron’s most famous must-try dishes is, oddly, a wonderful German pork knuckle served with mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. There is plenty of pork, free-range chicken and duck offerings, the latter being particularly satisfying in generous baked duck topped with vegetables. If the jungle setting makes you feel adventurous, try the ever-growing list of crocodile and ostrich dishes. All in all, there is something delicious for
everyone, be they Thai, Chinese, or even German. No one should leave disappointed. But give the dessert and coffee a miss, they are simply not up to snuff.
WINES
A decent, if unspectacular, selection of European and Thai wines is available, most averaging around 1,000 baht.
SERVICE
Impeccable. The staff-to-patron ratio seems exceptionally high here and the waiters are always at your beck and call.
PRICE
Most dishes cost between 100-200 baht. Dinner for two without wine is under 1,000 baht.
