Koh Samui now ranks high on the chart of idyllic getaway spots for people the world over. Whether it is a weekend break from Bangkok or a threemonth sojourn from Europe, Samui is easily accessible from national and international gateways. The island offers a range of upmarket and rustic resorts with a full basket of holiday diversions, and, best of all, brims with restaurants to tantalise and sate even the most discerning palates of locals and foreigners.

No matter where you choose to chill on the island, excellent restaurants are within easy reach. Based on guest feedback through the past year, seafood appears to be uppermost on the mind of visiting diners. The catch of the day may be many hours away from big city kitchens, but on Samui, the myriad produce of fishermen is plucked from the nets and sped to restaurant chefs within minutes. The emphasis is on fresh.

The many genres of culinary fare now available on Samui ensure that diners with all kinds of preferences can enjoy the perfect repast. This ranges from spicy local cuisine without or without the influence of the Muslim population in the south, to unique dishes from countries half a world away. For adventurous diners, various restaurants offer cuisines not commonly found elsewhere in Thailand. Try delectable Scandinavian fare, Brazilian full -feast barbeques with Rio-style entertainment and Cajun creations with the backdrop of State-side blues music.

Of course, ambience is a key ingredient to a memorable meal, and with city escapists in mind, we emphasise tranquil seaside dining this year. Nothing soothes the soul better than savouring a fine dinner enhanced by silky soft breezes and the susurration of ocean waves. Prices vary depending on the style and quality of the restaurant but for the most part are well within range of all visitor budgets. In fact, if truth be told, having a meal at a food shop outside of Bangkok tends to be much less expensive than in the capital. Service standards vary as well with the type of eatery visited, but for the most part, Thai hospitality prevails and one can expect an enjoyable dining experience even at the most humble of places.

As Samui continues to develop and welcome visitors from the world over, the selection of wonderful restaurants seems to increase exponentially. Make a choice from our guide and expect nothing less than gastronomic titillation.
